【健康日历】5·29 世界肠道健康日

World Gut Health Day was established in 2005 by the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) on May 29th each year, with the aim of reminding people to pay attention to the warnings issued by the body and to be mindful of their health.

01- What is the intestine?

The intestine refers to the digestive tract that runs from the pylorus of the stomach to the anus. The intestine is the longest and most functionally important section of the digestive tract.

02- Intestinal function

The human intestine is about 7-8 meters long and is divided into three parts: the small intestine, large intestine, and rectum. The small intestine is about 5-6 meters long and is mainly responsible for absorbing nutrients from food. The large intestine is about 1.6 meters long and is responsible for absorbing residual water from food, concentrating food residues, forming feces, and finally excreting them through the rectum and anus.

The gut is the largest immune organ in the human body, also known as the second brain, so gut health is crucial.

03- Intestinal Health Crisis

The intestine is not only responsible for digestion: besides the brain, the intestine is the most sensitive and delicate organ in the human body, and can be called the second brain. The intestinal wall is as thin as a cicada's wing, and there are over 100 million neurons in the reticular nerve bundle that can operate independently, make autonomous judgments, and give orders. If there is a disease in the intestines, it will inevitably have adverse effects on the brain. The intestine is still an important immune organ in the human body. Wherever there is mucous membrane, there will be lymphoid tissue. The intestine has the largest surface area and comes into contact with the most foreign bacteria, so lymphoid tissue is the most developed, gathering 70% -80% of the body's immune cells to fight against constantly invading bacteria and viruses.

According to media reports, the incidence rate of colorectal cancer in Guangzhou ranks first among the 31 tumor registration points nationwide. Among all cancers, colorectal cancer has risen very "eye-catching", with the incidence rate rising from the fifth to the second place ten years ago, and the death ranking rising from the fifth to the third place ten years ago, both higher than the international average and close to developed countries such as Europe and the United States.

The national cancer registration results show that the incidence rate of colorectal cancer in China increased from 25/100000 in 2003 to 31/100000 in 2008. However, the incidence rate of colorectal cancer among Guangzhou residents has exceeded 45/100000! This figure ranks first in incidence rate among 31 tumor registration points in China. 04- Probiotics and Gut Health
1) What are probiotics?

According to scientists, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the World Health Organization (WHO), probiotics are living microorganisms that, when consumed in sufficient quantities, have beneficial effects on the health of the host.

2) The function of probiotics

The key to intestinal health lies in maintaining the balance of gut microbiota. Probiotics can increase the number of beneficial bacteria in the intestine, maintain the dynamic balance of gut microbiota, and benefit intestinal health. Probiotics can also synthesize various vitamins in the intestine, providing the body with essential vitamin supply.

According to some scientific journals abroad, probiotics can play a beneficial role in improving bowel movements and enhancing the body's resistance.

·Improve gastrointestinal function

The structure of gut microbiota is closely related to gut health. When the number of probiotics in the intestine is greater than or equal to the number of harmful bacteria, the structure of the microbiota tends to be balanced, and the normal function of the intestine is maintained. On the contrary, when the number of harmful bacteria in the intestine exceeds that of probiotics, intestinal health will turn red, leading to intestinal problems such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, intestinal dysfunction, and indigestion.

·Value added intestinal probiotics

The key to protecting the intestines is to ensure the proportion of probiotics in the intestines. The proportion of probiotics in the intestines of physically strong people reaches 70%, while that of ordinary people is 25%. The proportion of probiotics in the intestines of constipated people is reduced to 15%, while the proportion of probiotics in the intestines of cancer patients is only 10%.

Probiotics are the enemy of harmful bacteria. Harmful bacteria produce toxins that harm health. Probiotics can effectively inhibit the reproduction of harmful bacteria through competitive effects, and they have a trade-off relationship in the intestine. Neutral bacteria are like wall grass, they stand on whichever side is stronger. So, the fundamental way to maintain intestinal health is to continuously strengthen the team of probiotics.

·Restore intestinal motility

Hippocrates, revered as the "father of medicine" in the West, believed that "the body's self-healing ability is the true panacea for treating diseases. The normal human gut has natural functions such as digestion, absorption, detoxification, and defecation. A sufficient number of beneficial bacteria in the gut can maintain its normal function without the need for excessive medication to control it. So, the most fundamental way to solve intestinal problems is to ensure the proportion of probiotics in the intestine, restore intestinal motility, and let the intestine return to a young and natural healthy state.
